Addressing Food Insecurity

As of 2022, approximately 12.8% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity. This translates to about 17 million households struggling to provide enough food for all their members at some point during the year. Addressing food insecurity is crucial for improving public health and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthy, productive life.

The lack of traumatic images of famine and misery “is the sneaky thing about poverty and hunger in America,” said Laurell Sims, co-executive director of the Urban Growers Collective, a Chicago nonprofit that operates eight urban farms in the city, runs education and job training programs, and distributes healthy food to people in need.

“We don’t see all the anxiety and stress of families teetering on the brink, of having to choose between paying the rent or the electric bill or providing food for their table, and how it affects their health and survival,” she said.

Households with food insecurity are at some point during the year uncertain of having or are unable to get enough food because of lack of money or other resources, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2020, 38.3 million people lived in food-insecure households, USDA data shows.

The 2020 AHA report said, ” Fixing problems such as food insecurity will require “policies, programs, and partnerships among local, state, and federal governments along with initiatives supported by the private sector,” the report said.

Making sure people use the resources available, from food banks to social services to government programs such as SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as food stamps. “There are a lot of benefits folks are eligible for but don’t know it,” she said. “We need to help them get that access. The more we can create that food sovereignty, the more we really can change the dynamics of neighborhoods.”

Profit Knot is committed to helping connect people suffering from food insecurity to the places that will help fulfill that need.

Promoting Literacy

Nationwide, on average, 79% of U.S. adults are literate in 2022. 21% of adults in the US are illiterate in 2022. 54% of adults have a literacy below sixth-grade level.

One effective way to end literacy is to invest in early childhood education to ensure that children develop foundational literacy skills from a young age. This requires community engagement by involving families and communities in literacy initiatives to help create a supportive environment for learning. Profit Knot aligns with nonprofits that are working to eradicate illiteracy and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to read and write proficiently. Most of these nonprofits concentrate on helping introduce reading to kids and make reading fun, enjoyable, and exciting.

Reading to a child has profound effects on their literacy development by building language skills, understanding of grammar with rich vocabulary and complex sentences, stimulating cognitive development, and exposing kids to diverse cultural experiences and lessons.

Profit Knot’s strategic alliances form a carefully curated list of nonprofits that are dedicated to helping kids discover the wonders of reading.

Fostering Community Development

Profit Knot plays a crucial role in fostering community connections through various strategies.

  1. Building partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and government bodies can amplify the impact of their initiatives. These collaborations leverage the strengths of different stakeholders to address community needs more effectively.
  2. Establishing clear and inclusive communication channels ensures that community members feel heard and valued.
  3. Creating diverse and meaningful volunteer opportunities allows community members to contribute their time and skills, fostering a sense of ownership and connection to the nonprofit’s mission.

By implementing these strategies, Profit Knot builds strong, supportive networks that enhance community well-being and drive positive change.

Donating for Change

Everyone can donate something. You don’t have to donate money, your car, or any of your personal belongings. A donation of your time or expertise can be even more valuable than money. There are times when a company will donate large amounts of food but without the help of volunteers there is no way that the food can be distributed to the people that need it. We all value and appreciate our volunteers. You will be surprised at the positive tangible impact your efforts make. We are always looking for volunteers to help build a supportive network and engaging environment with meaningful tasks aligned with their passions. The registration process is straightforward.
